About Us

My name is Mathieu Gasquet, and I manage everything related to We Travel Wales, including the website and social media.

I was born and raised in Turin, in northern Italy, to an Italian mother and a French father. I spent time in France, where I studied cinema and photography and, for over ten years, I worked as a filmmaker and photographer, and ran my own production studio.

Italy is also the place where I met my wife, Heather, while she was working as an au pair for an Italian family.

Why Wales?

Thanks to Heather and her family connections (she was born in Canada to British parents), I first visited Wales in 2010. We had only two afternoons of sunshine out of the 11 days we spent there, but the dramatic light between showers and the vibrant green hills left a lasting impression on me. We quickly fell in love with the country, making it our default holiday destination in the years that followed.

After some time, tired of our jobs in Italy and intrigued by the possibility of blogging and earning a living independently, we decided to move to Wales and start a new life.

Mathieu channeled his passion for photography by becoming a full-time camera reviewer on our website mirrorlesscomparison.com as well as our YouTube channel, while Heather fuelled her passion for languages by creating Daily Italian Words, dedicated to the Italian language and those who want to learn it. Later, she launched We Learn Welsh, dedicated—you guessed it—to the Welsh language.

After spending almost ten years taking photographs all around Wales and starting a family, we realised the country might well be our final destination. We began to ponder the idea of a new website that would pay tribute to this beautiful place we’re lucky to call home. The thought grew stronger and stronger in our minds until, in 2024, we translated it into action, and We Travel Wales was born.

Our Goal with We Travel Wales

With this website, we aim to explore and showcase the beauty of the country and its many locations, both big and small, that are worth visiting. We want to share useful information, interesting stories, and beautiful photographs. Through our newsletter and Facebook group, we aim to build a community, providing more opportunities to hear what people are looking for and what their favourite things to do in Wales are. This will also help us discover new places we have yet to explore or visit properly!

Whether you fancy immersing yourself in nature, discovering local wildlife, soaking up the vibrant colours of a seaside town, or taking part in various activities with friends or family, we hope you’ll find our website helpful!
